Luxembourg’s tax card, the fiche de retenue d’impôt, is one of the most practical documents in the payroll system. It tells an employer or pension fund which withholding rules to apply before salary or pension income reaches the worker’s bank account. That makes it a quiet but important 2026 document: if the card is wrong, the monthly payslip can be wrong even when the annual tax bill is later corrected.

The first item to check is the tax class. Class 1, 1a or 2 changes how much tax is withheld during the year, and the correct class depends on personal circumstances such as marital status, children and certain single-parent situations. Workers should also check the name of the employer or pension fund, the address, and whether the card is marked as the main card or an additional card.

The additional-card issue matters for people with more than one job, a salary plus a pension, or several pension providers. Luxembourg normally needs one main withholding card and separate treatment for additional income sources. If the wrong employer uses the main card, withholding can be too low or too high during the year.

Changes during 2026 should not be left until the annual return. A move, marriage, divorce, birth of a child, start or end of employment, pension change, or cross-border situation can all affect the information used by payroll. The Direct Tax Administration and Guichet.lu direct residents toward official procedures and online services, including MyGuichet, for checking or correcting tax information.

A tax card does not replace the annual tax return or annual adjustment. It is a withholding tool. The final tax position can still be settled through the normal filing or adjustment process, but correcting the card early reduces the risk of a large catch-up payment or unnecessary cash-flow pressure later.
