Child Benefit in Luxembourg: Amounts and How to Claim the Allocations Familiales
Every child living in Luxembourg or supported by a cross-border worker draws a monthly family allowance from the Caisse pour l'avenir des enfants. Here is what it pays in 2026 and how to apply.

Luxembourg runs one of Europe's more generous child-benefit systems, and almost every family raising a child in the country touches it. The monthly allocation familiale is paid by the Caisse pour l'avenir des enfants (CAE), known in Luxembourgish as the Zukunftskeess. There is no income ceiling and no birth-order distinction: the same amount is due for a first child as for a fourth.
How much you receive each month
The core benefit is a flat monthly amount per child. Since the 1 June 2026 salary-scale indexation (cost-of-living index 992.24), the base allowance is €315.04 per child per month.
Two age supplements top this up automatically:
- From the month a child turns 6, an extra €23.81, for a total of €338.85.
- From the month a child turns 12, an extra €59.44 instead, for a total of €374.47.
These figures are indexed to the cost-of-living index, so they move whenever salaries and pensions are re-indexed. The allowance is due from a child's month of birth until age 18, and can run to 25 for children still in school, in vocational training or studying. You can confirm the live amounts on the CAE amounts page.
The back-to-school allowance
Once a year the CAE adds a one-off allocation de rentrée scolaire (back-to-school allowance) for school-age children. It is a fixed amount that is not indexed:
- €115 for a child aged 6 to 11.
- €235 for a child aged 12 and over.
It is paid automatically every August to children who already receive the family allowance, so there is normally no separate form to file. For families paid a differential supplement on a half-yearly basis, it is folded into the relevant payment.
The birth and antenatal allowances
Separately, the CAE pays a birth allowance (prime de naissance) totalling €1,740.09, in three equal tranches of €580.03:
- The antenatal tranche, conditional on the mother completing the required medical and dental examinations during pregnancy.
- The birth tranche, conditional on a post-natal examination of the mother.
- The postnatal tranche, paid after the child's second birthday once the required infant medical check-ups are done.
Each tranche is claimed on its own form and on its own conditions, so it pays to track the deadlines closely.
Who is entitled
Two broad groups qualify. Residents are entitled for every child living with them in Luxembourg. Cross-border workers — people who work in Luxembourg but live in France, Belgium or Germany — are entitled through the affiliated parent's employment, with the Luxembourg benefit typically paid as a differential supplement on top of the family benefit of the country of residence. The right follows the worker's affiliation to Luxembourg social security, not the child's address.
How and where to apply
All family benefits run through the CAE. In practice:
- For a resident newborn, the family allowance is usually opened automatically from the civil-registry birth record; you should still confirm your file and bank details with the CAE.
- Cross-border workers and families moving to Luxembourg generally need to submit a claim, with the child's birth certificate and proof of the working parent's affiliation.
- Forms, eligibility checks and contact details are on the CAE website and on the national portal guichet.public.lu.
Keep your address, custody arrangements and bank account up to date with the CAE, since the agency pays directly to the parent or legal guardian and adjusts the file automatically as each child crosses the age-6 and age-12 thresholds.
Last reviewed: June 2026. Amounts are indexed and can change with each cost-of-living indexation; verify current figures with the CAE before relying on them.
