Mobile and Internet Providers in Luxembourg: How to Choose
POST, Tango and Orange dominate Luxembourg's telecom market. Here is how their networks, fibre offers, prepaid brands and contracts compare so you pick the right plan.

Luxembourg is one of Europe's best-connected countries, with mobile networks reaching roughly 99% of the population and FTTH fibre passing about 83.8% of households at the end of 2024. Three operators run their own networks, and each also offers a prepaid brand. Here is how to choose.
The three main operators
POST Luxembourg is the historical incumbent and operates the broadest and most reliable network, including the strongest coverage in the rural north (the Oesling). Its mobile network was named "Best in Test" three years running, and its POP Mobile plans include 5G at no extra cost. POST has invested in fibre since 1997 and aims to reach 100% of households by 2030. It sits at the premium end of the market.
Tango is a strong challenger, competitive in the mid- and high-end. Its GO)) mobile plans bundle 5G and a free eSIM, and add features such as Data Boost and Keep Surfing. Its GO)) fibre offers reach up to 8.5 Gbit/s with Wi-Fi 7 and TV bundles of 130+ channels.
Orange Luxembourg rounds out the trio. Its mobile plans include 5G, and its home internet uses POST's regulated FTTH network, with premium tiers up to 8.5 Gbit/s (and VDSL/ADSL where fibre is not yet built). Because the underlying fibre is shared, the practical difference between operators on a fibre line often comes down to price, bundle perks and customer service rather than raw speed.
All three are mobile network operators in their own right, so none resells another's mobile signal. That makes coverage genuinely different between them, and worth checking against the addresses where you actually live, work and commute.
Prepaid versus contract
If you want flexibility or a short stay, prepaid is simplest. The main brands are:
- POST TipTop — runs on POST's network but is 4G only (no 5G); validity depends on the top-up amount.
- Tango prepaid (GO)) — includes 5G in covered areas, with monthly call-and-SMS packs and data add-ons.
- Orange Hello — includes 5G and adds US roaming at no surcharge.
Contracts (subscriptions) generally give more data, 5G, optional handsets and bundle discounts, but commit you for a term. Compare allowances and commitment length on independent sites like Switchr and LetzCompare.
What to compare
When shopping, weigh these factors:
- Coverage — POST leads in the rural north; all three are strong in the city and along motorways.
- Data and 5G — confirm 5G is included (it is excluded on POST TipTop prepaid).
- Fibre vs DSL — fibre (FTTH) gives symmetric multi-gigabit speeds and low latency; DSL over copper is the fallback where fibre is not yet built.
- TV bundles — Tango and POST sell internet + TV + sport packages; check channel counts and Wi-Fi hardware (Wi-Fi 7).
- EU roaming — under EU "Roam Like At Home" (Regulation 2022/612, in force to 2032), your plan works across the EEA at domestic rates.
- Bundle discounts — combining mobile and fibre with one operator usually unlocks savings or bonus data, so price the whole household together rather than line by line.
As a rule of thumb, choose POST if reliable rural coverage matters most, Tango or Orange if you want aggressive bundle pricing, and prepaid if you value flexibility over the lowest per-gigabyte cost.
Getting a SIM, eSIM and home internet
By law, every prepaid or contract SIM in Luxembourg must be linked to a valid ID (national ID card, passport or residence permit). All three operators support eSIM at no surcharge, so a compatible phone can activate a line digitally. For home internet, check fibre eligibility at your address first; if fibre is available you can usually order an FTTH plan with a Wi-Fi router and optional TV box, with installation scheduled by the operator.
The regulator and keeping your number
The Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (ILR) oversees telecoms. Luxembourg mobile numbers begin with 6 and are nine digits. You have the right to keep your number when switching operator (portability): it is free and completed within one working day once conditions are met, for both contract and prepaid lines. Start the switch with your new operator, who handles the port for you.

Frequently asked
- Which operator has the best coverage in Luxembourg?
- All three networks reach about 99% of the population, but POST has the broadest and most reliable coverage, particularly in the rural north (the Oesling). Tango and Orange are very strong in Luxembourg City and along motorways.
- Is 5G included on prepaid plans?
- It depends on the brand. Tango prepaid GO)) and Orange Hello include 5G in covered areas, but POST TipTop is 4G only. Postpaid plans such as POST POP Mobile include 5G at no extra cost.
- Do I need an ID to buy a SIM card?
- Yes. Luxembourg law requires every prepaid or contract SIM to be linked to a valid identity document, such as a national ID card, passport or residence permit. This applies even when buying at a reseller.
- Can I keep my phone number if I switch operator?
- Yes. Number portability is a right overseen by the ILR. It is free and completed within one working day once conditions are met, for both prepaid and contract lines. Start the process with your new operator.
- What is the difference between fibre and DSL?
- Fibre (FTTH) carries data as light, giving symmetric multi-gigabit speeds and very low latency. DSL runs over copper phone lines and is slower; operators use VDSL or ADSL only where fibre is not yet available.
- Will my Luxembourg plan work elsewhere in the EU?
- Yes. Under the EU Roam Like At Home rules (Regulation 2022/612, in force to 2032), your domestic allowances work across the EEA at no surcharge, on both physical SIM and eSIM.
